A Snail's Pace
Garden snail peeks out from his beautiful shell to head for the shade of the shrubs in the garden. When blown up, this image shows the gorgeous and intricate design of the shell. The bottom half has what almost looks like carvings in it. Very beautiful. Most land snails are nocturnal, but following a rain may come out of their hiding places during the day. They move with a gliding motion by means of a long flat muscular organ called a foot. Mucus, constantly secreted by glands in the foot, facilitates movement and leaves a silverlike slimy trail. Snails belong to the class Gastropoda, and are related to the clams and oysters Black and white...North Carolina, May 2009
