Banding a Humming Bird
A tiny band is placed around the leg of this humming bird at the Humming Bird Banding Event at Sipes White Mountain Wildlife Refuge in eastern Arizona. The feeders have remote controlled nets placed over them, and the migrating humming birds are caught and placed in smaller net cages. They are weighed, measured, beaks measured, fat content checked, sex and species registered, and each is adopted (for a fee) before the band is placed around its tiny leg. The bird is then rehydrated at a feeding station or with a dropper before it is released into the hand of the person who adopted it, and allowed to fly away on its own time. 2009
